Surah al-Ahzab with English Translation

1. اے نبی! آپ اللہ کے تقوٰی پر (حسبِ سابق استقامت سے) قائم رہیں اور کافروں اور منافقوں کا (یہ) کہنا (کہ ہمارے ساتھ مذہبی سمجھوتہ کر لیں ہرگز) نہ مانیں، بیشک اللہ خوب جاننے والا بڑی حکمت والا ہےo

1. O Prophet! Remain mindful of Allah (as ever) and do not yield (to the suggestions of) the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

1. O Prophet! Remain firm in fearing Allah (with perseverance as before) and do not agree at all to what the disbelievers and the hypocrites say (i.e., ‘Conclude with us religious agreement’). Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, Most Wise.

1. Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu ittaqi Allaha wala tutiAAi alkafireena waalmunafiqeena inna Allaha kana AAaleeman hakeeman

1. Kjære Profet (ﷺ)! Vær du stø i gudfryktigheten (med sjelsstyrke som du alltid har vært), og si deg aldri enig med de vantro og hyklerne (når de sier: inngå kompromiss med oss i religionen). Sannelig, Allah er allvitende, mest vis.

1. ऐ नबी! आप अल्लाह के तक़्वा पर (हस्बे साबिक़ इस्तिक़ामत से) क़ाइम रहें और काफिरों और मुनाफिक़ों का (ये) कहना (कि हमारे साथ मज़हबी समझौता कर लें हर्गिज़) न मानें, बेशक अल्लाह ख़ूब जानने वाला बड़ी हिक्मत वाला है।

১. হে নবী! আপনি আল্লাহ্-ভীতির উপর (পূর্ববতী দৃঢ়তা অনুসারে) অবিচল থাকুন। আর কাফের ও মুনাফিকদের (এ) কথা (কখনো) মেনে নেবেন না (যে, আমাদের সাথে ধর্মীয় সমঝোতা করে নাও)। নিশ্চয়ই আল্লাহ সর্বজ্ঞ, প্রজ্ঞাবান।

يا أيها النبي اتق الله ولا تطع الكافرين والمنافقين إن الله كان عليما حكيما

2. اور آپ اس (فرمان) کی پیروی جاری رکھیئے جو آپ کے پاس آپ کے رب کی طرف سے وحی کیا جاتا ہے، بیشک اللہ ان کاموں سے خبردار ہے جو تم انجام دیتے ہوo

2. And keep following what is revealed to you by your Lord. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

2. And continue following this (command) which is revealed to you from your Lord. Surely, Allah is Well Aware of the works that you do.

2. WaittabiAA ma yooha ilayka min rabbika inna Allaha kana bima taAAmaloona khabeeran

2. Og fortsett å følge det (ord) som blir deg åpenbart fra Herren din. Sannelig, Allah er vel underrettet om alt det dere gjør.

2. और आप उस (फरमान) की पैरवी जारी रखिए जो आपके पास आपके रब की तरफ से वही किया जाता है, बेशक अल्लाह उन कामों से ख़बरदार है जो तुम अंजाम देते हो।

২. আর আপনি এর অনুসরণ বহাল রাখুন যা আপনার প্রতি আপনার প্রতিপালকের পক্ষ থেকে প্রত্যাদেশ করা হয়। নিশ্চয়ই আল্লাহ তা’আলা সকল কর্মকান্ড সম্পর্কে অবগত যা তোমরা সম্পদান করো।

واتبع ما يوحى إليك من ربك إن الله كان بما تعملون خبيرا

3. اور اللہ پر بھروسہ (جاری) رکھئے، اور اللہ ہی کارساز کافی ہےo

3. And maintain your trust in Allah. Allah suffices as a Guardian.

3. And maintain your trust in Allah and Sufficient is Allah as a Guardian.

3. Watawakkal AAala Allahi wakafa biAllahi wakeelan

3. Og fortsett å sette din lit til Allah alene. Allah er mer enn nok som formynder.

3. और अल्लाह पर भरोसा (जारी) रखिए और अल्लाह ही कारसाज़ काफी है।

৩. আর আল্লাহ্‌র উপর ভরসা (বহাল) রাখুন। অভিভাবক হিসাবে আল্লাহ্ই যথেষ্ট।

وتوكل على الله وكفى بالله وكيلا

4. اللہ نے کسی آدمی کے لئے اس کے پہلو میں دو دل نہیں بنائے، اور اس نے تمہاری بیویوں کو جنہیں تم ظِہار کرتے ہوئے ماں کہہ دیتے ہو تمہاری مائیں نہیں بنایا، اور نہ تمہارے منہ بولے بیٹوں کو تمہارے (حقیقی) بیٹے بنایا، یہ سب تمہارے منہ کی اپنی باتیں ہیں، اور اللہ حق بات فرماتا ہے، اور وہی (سیدھا) راستہ دکھاتا ہےo

4. Allah does not place two hearts in a person’s breast. Nor does He consider your wives whom you repudiate by zihar* (to be unlawful for you) as your (real) mothers. Nor does He consider your adopted sons as your (actual) sons. These are only words from your mouths, but Allah speaks the truth. And He (alone) guides the way.

* Zihar was a pre-Islamic Arabian practice in which a man could repudiate his wife by saying: ‘You are to me as my mother’s back (zahr).’ By declaring this, the wife was deprived of her marital rights but was not yet free to contract another marriage. Islam abolished this unjust practice.

4. Allah has not made for any man two hearts inside his breast, nor has He made your wives your mothers whom you call mothers by way of zihar (a form of divorce). Nor has He made your adopted sons your (real) sons. These are merely the utterances of your mouth. And Allah says the truth and He alone shows the (straight) path.

4. Ma jaAAala Allahu lirajulin min qalbayni fee jawfihi wama jaAAala azwajakumu allaee tuthahiroona minhunna ommahatikum wama jaAAala adAAiyaakum abnaakum thalikum qawlukum biafwahikum waAllahu yaqoolu alhaqqa wahuwa yahdee alssabeela

4. Allah har ikke for noen mann skapt to hjerter i hans brysthulrom, og ikke har Han gjort hustruene deres til mødrene deres, som dere kaller for deres mødre når dere sier skilsmisseformelen til dem, og heller ikke har Han gjort deres adoptivsønner til deres (ekte) sønner. Dette er kun deres egen munns ord. Allah sier sannheten, og Han rettleder til (den rette) veien.

4. अल्लाह ने किसी आदमी के लिए उसके पहलू में दो दिल नहीं बनाए, और उसने तुम्हारी बीवियों को जिन्हें तुम ज़िहार करते हुए मां कह देते हो तुम्हारी माएं नहीं बनाया, और न तुम्हारे मुंह बोले बेटों को तुम्हारे (हक़ीक़ी) बेटे बनाया, ये सब तुम्हारे मुंह की अपनी बातें हैं और अल्लाह हक़्क़ बात फरमाता है और वोही (सीधा) रास्ता दिखाता है।

৪. আল্লাহ্ কোনো মানুষের অভ্যন্তরে দু’টি হৃদয় সৃষ্টি করেন নি, আর তিনি তোমাদের স্ত্রীদেরকে তোমাদের জননীও করেননি, যাদেরকে তোমরা যিহার করার মাধ্যমে (অর্থাৎ বিচ্ছেদের এক রূপে) মা বলে দাও। আর তিনি তোমাদের পালকপুত্রদেরকেও তোমাদের (প্রকৃত) পুত্র করেননি। এসব তো কেবল তোমাদের মুখের কথা। আর আল্লাহ্ সত্য কথাই বলেন এবং তিনিই (সরল) পথ দেখান।

ما جعل الله لرجل من قلبين في جوفه وما جعل أزواجكم اللائي تظاهرون منهن أمهاتكم وما جعل أدعياءكم أبناءكم ذلكم قولكم بأفواهكم والله يقول الحق وهو يهدي السبيل

5. تم اُن (منہ بولے بیٹوں) کو ان کے باپ (ہی کے نام) سے پکارا کرو، یہی اللہ کے نزدیک زیادہ عدل ہے، پھر اگر تمہیں ان کے باپ معلوم نہ ہوں تو (وہ) دین میں تمہارے بھائی ہیں اور تمہارے دوست ہیں۔ اور اس بات میں تم پر کوئی گناہ نہیں جو تم نے غلطی سے کہی لیکن (اس پر ضرور گناہ ہوگا) جس کا ارادہ تمہارے دلوں نے کیا ہو، اور اللہ بہت بخشنے والا بہت رحم فرمانے والا ہےo

5. Call them (i.e. your adopted sons) after their (real) fathers’ (names). That is more equitable in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brethren in faith and close associates. There is no blame for what you did by mistake, barring what your hearts may deliberately intend. And Allah is Most-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

5. Call them (the adopted sons) after their fathers’ (names). That is most just in the sight of Allah. So if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in the Din (Religion) and your friends. And there is no sin on you for what you said by mistake, but (that will be a sure sin) which your hearts intend. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.

5. OdAAoohum liabaihim huwa aqsatu AAinda Allahi fain lam taAAlamoo abaahum faikhwanukum fee alddeeni wamawaleekum walaysa AAalaykum junahun feema akhtatum bihi walakin ma taAAammadat quloobukum wakana Allahu ghafooran raheeman

5. Kall dem (adoptivsønnene) etter deres fedre (fedres navn). Dette er det mest rettferdige i Allahs øyne. Men hvis dere ikke kjenner til fedrene deres, så er de deres brødre i levemåten (religionen) og vennene deres. Og det er ingen synd for dere i det dere sier ved feil, men det (vil visselig være en synd i det) deres hjerte har til hensikt. Allah er mest tilgivende, evig nåderik.

5. तुम उन (मुंह बोले बेटों) को उनके बाप (ही के नाम) से पुकारा करो, येही अल्लाह के नज़्दीक ज़ियादा अ़द्‌ल है, फिर अगर तुम्हें उनके बाप मालूम न हों तो (वोह) दीन में तुम्हारे भाई हैं और तुम्हारे दोस्त हैं। और इस बात में तुम पर कोई गुनाह नहीं जो तुमने ग़लती से कही लेकिन (उस पर ज़रूर गुनाह होगा) जिसका इरादा तुम्हारे दिलों ने किया हो, और अल्लाह बहुत बख़्शने वाला बहुत रहम फरमाने वाला है।

৫. তোমরা তাদেরকে (অর্থাৎ পালকপুত্রদেরকে) তাদের পিতৃপরিচয়েই আহ্বান করো। এটিই আল্লাহ্‌র নিকট অধিকতর ন্যায়সঙ্গত। আর যদি তোমরা তাদের পিতাদের না জানো, তবে (তারা) তোমাদের দ্বীনি ভাই এবং তোমাদের বন্ধু। আর এতে তোমাদের কোনো গোনাহ নেই, যা তোমরা ভুলক্রমে বলে ফেলেছো; তবে (তা অবশ্যই গুনাহ হবে) যার সংকল্প তোমাদের অন্তর করেছে। আর আল্লাহ্ মহাক্ষমাশীল, অসীম দয়ালু।

ادعوهم لآبائهم هو أقسط عند الله فإن لم تعلموا آباءهم فإخوانكم في الدين ومواليكم وليس عليكم جناح فيما أخطأتم به ولكن ما تعمدت قلوبكم وكان الله غفورا رحيما

6. یہ نبیِ (مکرّم) مومنوں کے ساتھ اُن کی جانوں سے زیادہ قریب اور حق دار ہیں اور آپ کی اَزواجِ (مطہّرات) اُن کی مائیں ہیں، اور خونی رشتہ دار اللہ کی کتاب میں (دیگر) مومنین اور مہاجرین کی نسبت (تقسیمِ وراثت میں) ایک دوسرے کے زیادہ حق دار ہیں سوائے اس کے کہ تم اپنے دوستوں پر احسان کرنا چاہو، یہ حکم کتابِ (الٰہی) میں لکھا ہوا ہےo

6. The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) is closer to the believers than their (own) souls,* while his wives are their mothers. The blood relatives are more entitled to inherit from one another according to the Book of Allah than (the rest of) the believers and the emigrants unless you show kindness to your close friends (through bequest). All this is written in the Book.

*

Or: The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) has a greater right and authority over the believers than they have over themselves.

Or: The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) should be considered and felt more beloved by the believers than their own selves.

6. This (Esteemed) Prophet is nearer to and has a greater claim on the believers than their own souls and his (pure) wives are their mothers. And blood relations have a greater claim one to another (in the distribution of inheritance) in the Book of Allah than (the rest of) the believers and the Emigrants except that you desire to do favour to your friends. This command is written in the Book of Allah.

6. Alnnabiyyu awla bialmumineena min anfusihim waazwajuhu ommahatuhum waoloo alarhami baAAduhum awla bibaAAdin fee kitabi Allahi mina almumineena waalmuhajireena illa an tafAAaloo ila awliyaikum maAAroofan kana thalika fee alkitabi mastooran

6. Denne (ærerike) Profeten (ﷺ) står de troende nærmere enn deres eget liv og har mer rett på dem, og (de hellige) hustruene hans er mødrene deres. Og blodsslektninger har mer krav på hverandre (når det gjelder arvens fordeling) enn de troende og utvandrerne ifølge Allahs bok, bortsett fra hvis dere ønsker å være godhjertet mot vennene deres. Denne befalingen er skrevet ned i boken (Allahs bok).

6. ये नबिय्ये (मुकर्रम सल्लल्लाहु अ़लैहि व सल्लम) मोमिनों के साथ उनकी जानों से ज़ियादा क़रीब और हक़्क़दार हैं और आपकी अज़्वाजे (मुतह्हरात) उनकी माएं हैं, और ख़ूनी रिश्तेदार अल्लाह की किताब में (दीगर) मोमिनीन और मुहाजिरीन की निस्बत (तक़्सीमे विरासत में) एक दूसरे के ज़ियादा हक़्क़दार हैं सिवाए इसके कि तुम अपने दोस्तों पर एहसान करना चाहो, ये हुक्म किताबे (इलाही) में लिखा हुआ है।

৬. এ (সম্মানিত) নবী মুমিনদের কাছে তাদের প্রাণের চেয়েও ঘনিষ্ঠতর এবং স্বত্বাধিকারী এবং তাঁর (পবিত্র) স্ত্রীগণ তাদের মাতা। আর রক্তসম্পর্কীয় আত্মীয়গণ আল্লাহ্‌র বিধান অনুসারে (অপরাপর) মুমিনগণ এবং মুহাজিরগণের চেয়ে (উত্তরাধিকার বন্টনের ক্ষেত্রে) একে অপরের নিকটতর, তবে তোমাদের বন্ধুদের ব্যতীত যাদেরকে তোমরা অনুগ্রহ করতে চাও। এ নির্দেশ (আল্লাহ্‌র) কিতাবে লিপিবদ্ধ।

النبي أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم وأزواجه أمهاتهم وأولوا الأرحام بعضهم أولى ببعض في كتاب الله من المؤمنين والمهاجرين إلا أن تفعلوا إلى أوليائكم معروفا كان ذلك في الكتاب مسطورا

7. اور (اے حبیب! یاد کیجئے) جب ہم نے انبیاء سے اُن (کی تبلیغِ رسالت) کا عہد لیا اور (خصوصاً) آپ سے اور نوح سے اور ابراہیم سے اور موسیٰ سے اور عیسٰی ابن مریم (علیھم السلام) سے اور ہم نے اُن سے نہایت پختہ عہد لیاo

7. And (remember) when We took a pledge from the prophets, as well as from you, and Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and ‘Isa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary). We took from them a solemn pledge (to call the people towards the upright religion),

7. And, (O Beloved, recall) when We took a covenant from the Prophets (to preach faith in their Prophethood) and (specially) from you and from Nuh (Noah) and from Ibrahim (Abraham) and Musa (Moses) and ‘Isa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), and We took from them a solemn covenant,

7. Waith akhathna mina alnnabiyyeena meethaqahum waminka wamin noohin waibraheema wamoosa waAAeesa ibni maryama waakhathna minhum meethaqan ghaleethan

7. Og (kjære elskede ﷺ! Kom i hu) den gang Vi sluttet en pakt med profetene (om å forkynne budskapet) og (særskilt) med deg, og med Noah og Abraham og Moses og Jesus, sønn av Maria, og Vi sluttet en svært høytidelig pakt med dem,

7. और (ऐ हबीब! याद कीजिए) जब हमने अम्बिया से उन (की तब्लीग़े रिसालत) का अ़हद लिया और (खु़सूसन) आपसे और नूह से और इब्राहीम से और मूसा से और ईसा इब्ने मर्यम (अ़लैहिमुस्सलाम) से और हमने उनसे निहायत पुख़्ता अ़हद लिया।

৭. আর (হে হাবীব! স্মরণ করুন,) যখন আমরা নবীগণের নিকট থেকে তাদের (নবুয়ত প্রচারের) অঙ্গীকার নিয়েছিলাম, (বিশেষ করে) আপনার নিকট থেকে, নূহ থেকে, ইবরাহীম থেকে, এবং মারইয়াম-তনয় ঈসা (আলাইহিমুস সালাম) থেকে। আর আমরা তাদের নিকট থেকে দৃঢ় অঙ্গীকার নিয়েছিলাম

وإذ أخذنا من النبيين ميثاقهم ومنك ومن نوح وإبراهيم وموسى وعيسى ابن مريم وأخذنا منهم ميثاقا غليظا

8. تاکہ (اللہ) سچوں سے اُن کے سچ کے بارے میں دریافت فرمائے، اور اس نے کافروں کے لئے دردناک عذاب تیار کر رکھا ہےo

8. so that He may question the truthful about their truthfulness. And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.

8. So that (Allah) asks the truthful about their truth. And He has prepared an agonizing torment for the disbelievers.

8. Liyasala alssadiqeena AAan sidqihim waaAAadda lilkafireena AAathaban aleeman

8. for at Han skal kunne spørre de sannferdige om deres sannhet. Han har forberedt en smertelig pine for de vantro.

8. ताकि (अल्लाह) सच्चों से उनके सच के बारे में दर्याफ्त फरमाए और उसने काफिरों के लिए दर्दनाक अ़ज़ाब तैयार कर रखा है।

,৮. যাতে (আল্লাহ্‌) সত্যবাদীদেরকে তাদের সত্যবাদিতা সম্পর্কে জিজ্ঞাসা করেন। আর তিনি কাফেরদের জন্যে প্রস্তুত রেখেছেন যন্ত্রণাদায়ক শাস্তি।

ليسأل الصادقين عن صدقهم وأعد للكافرين عذابا أليما
