Surah at-Tawbah with English Translation

1. اللہ اور اس کے رسول (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی طرف سے بیزاری (و دست برداری) کا اعلان ہے ان مشرک لوگوں کی طرف جن سے تم نے (صلح و امن کا) معاہدہ کیا تھا (لیکن اُنہوں نے معاہدہ توڑتے ہوئے حالتِ جنگ کو پھر بحال کردیا)o

1. (This is) a (declaration of) acquittal from Allah and His Messenger (addressed) to those (Meccan) polytheists with whom you had made a treaty (of peace and they breached it).

1. Absolution (i.e., renunciation) is declared from Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) to those polytheists with whom you had made a treaty of peace (but they breached the truce and restored the state of war).

1. Baraatun mina Allahi warasoolihi ila allatheena AAahadtum mina almushrikeena

1. Allah og Sendebudet Hans (ﷺ) erklærer herved opphør (ansvarsfrihet) til de flergudsdyrkerne som dere inngikk (freds- og forsonings-) traktat med (men de overholdt ikke traktatens krav og initierte heller krig mot dere).

1. अल्लाह और उसके रसूल (सल्लल्लाहु अ़लैहि व सल्लम) की तरफ से बेज़ारी (व दस्त बर्दारी) का ऐलान है उन मुश्रिक लोगों की तरफ जिनसे तुमने (सुल्हो अम्न का) मुआहिदा किया था (लेकिन उन्होंने मुआहिदा तोड़ते हुए हालते जंग को फिर बहाल कर दिया) ।

১. আল্লাহ্ ও তাঁর রাসূল (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া আলিহী ওয়াসাল্লাম)-এঁর পক্ষ থেকে সম্পর্কচ্ছেদ (ও অব্যাহতি) ঘোষণা করা হলো ঐসব মুশরিকদের উদ্দেশ্যে, যাদের সাথে তোমরা সন্ধিতে (ও নিরাপত্তা চুক্তিতে) আবদ্ধ ছিলে। (আর তারা স্বীয় অঙ্গীকারের উপর অটল থাকেনি।)

براءة من الله ورسوله إلى الذين عاهدتم من المشركين

2. پس (اے مشرکو!) تم زمین میں چار ماہ (تک) گھوم پھر لو (اس مہلت کے اختتام پر تمہیں جنگ کا سامنا کرنا ہوگا) اور جان لو کہ تم اللہ کو ہرگز عاجز نہیں کر سکتے اور بیشک اللہ کافروں کو رسوا کرنے والا ہےo

2. (O breachers of the peace!) You may (still) travel freely in the land for four months (as a truce period) and know that you cannot escape Allah (by frustrating Him). And Allah will disgrace the disbelievers (who persecuted the peaceful civilians).

2. So, (O polytheists,) you may move about in the land (for) four months. (You will face war after this term.) And bear in mind that you cannot at all weaken Allah, and surely Allah is the Abaser of the disbelievers.

2. Faseehoo fee alardi arbaAAata ashhurin waiAAlamoo annakum ghayru muAAjizee Allahi waanna Allaha mukhzee alkafireena

2. (Å, flergudsdyrkere!) Vandre rundt omkring i landet i fire måneder (på denne fristens slutt må dere stå ansikt til ansikt med krigen). Og vit at dere aldri kan gjøre Allah maktesløs! Og sannelig, Allah vil gjøre de vantro til vanærede.

2. पस (ऐ मुश्रिको!) तुम ज़मीन में चार माह (तक) घूम फिर लो (इस मोहलत के इख़्तिताम पर तुम्हे जंग का सामना करना होगा) और जान लो कि तुम अल्लाह को हर्गिज़ आजिज़ नहीं कर सकते और बेशक अल्लाह काफिरों को रुस्वा करने वाला है।

২. অতঃপর (হে মুশরিকেরা!) তোমরা স্বদেশে চারমাস (পর্যন্ত) ঘুরাফেরা করো (এ অবকাশ শেষ হওয়ার পর তোমাদেরকে যুদ্ধের মুখোমুখি হতে হবে)। আর জেনে রেখো, তোমরা আল্লাহকে কখনোই দুর্বল করতে পারবে না। আর নিশ্চয়ই আল্লাহ্ কাফেরদেরকে অপদস্তকারী।

فسيحوا في الأرض أربعة أشهر واعلموا أنكم غير معجزي الله وأن الله مخزي الكافرين

3. (یہ آیات) اللہ اور اس کے رسول (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی جانب سے تمام لوگوں کی طرف حجِ اکبر کے دن اعلانِ (عام) ہے کہ اللہ مشرکوں سے بے زار ہے اور اس کا رسول (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) بھی (ان سے بری الذمّہ ہے)، پس (اے مشرکو!) اگر تم توبہ کر لو تو وہ تمہارے حق میں بہتر ہے اور اگر تم نے روگردانی کی تو جان لو کہ تم ہرگز اللہ کو عاجز نہ کر سکو گے، اور (اے حبیب!) آپ کافروں کو دردناک عذاب کی خبر سنا دیںo

3. (This is) a proclamation from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the Day of the Great Pilgrimage that Allah and His Messenger are absolved from all obligations to the (peace breaching) polytheists.* So, if you repent, it would be better for you. But if you turn away, know that you cannot escape Allah. And warn the (persecuting) disbelievers of a painful punishment.

* This proclamation was made as a response to the massacre of the peaceful people of Banu Khuza‘a, who, according to the Treaty of Hudaybiya, were allies of the state of Medina. The Quraysh supported the people of Banu Bakr with arms and men in launching a murderous attack on Banu Khuza‘a. As a result of this act, many innocent people were killed, while others were persecuted, tortured and detained. This act of breaching the Treaty of Hudaybiya absolved the state of Medina from all obligations. Hence, verses 1–16 were revealed in this historical context, referring to a specific event, and do not apply to non-Muslims in general.

3. (These Verses) are a (public) declaration from Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) for all mankind on the day of the Great Pilgrimage that Allah is absolved of all obligations to the polytheists, and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) too (is free from all obligations to them). So, (O polytheists,) if you repent, that is better for you, but if you turn away, then know that you cannot at all make Allah’s strategy ineffective. And, (O Beloved,) warn the disbelievers of a grievous torment,

3. Waathanun mina Allahi warasoolihi ila alnnasi yawma alhajji alakbari anna Allaha bareeon mina almushrikeena warasooluhu fain tubtum fahuwa khayrun lakum wain tawallaytum faiAAlamoo annakum ghayru muAAjizee Allahi wabashshiri allatheena kafaroo biAAathabin aleemin

3. (Disse versene er) en (offentlig) erklæring fra Allah og Sendebudet Hans (ﷺ) til hele menneskeheten på den største pilegrimsdagen, at Allah er ansvarsfri for alle forpliktelser overfor flergudsdyrkerne og også Sendebudet Hans (ﷺ er ansvarsfri). (Å, flergudsdyrkere!) Hvis dere vender om i anger, så er det bedre for dere, men hvis dere vender bort, så vit at dere aldri kan gjøre Allah maktesløs! Og (kjære elskede ﷺ!), bebud dem som er vantro, om en smertelig pine.

3. (ये आयात) अल्लाह और उसके रसूल (सल्लल्लाहु अ़लैहि व सल्लम) की जानिब से तमाम लोगों की तरफ हज्जे अक्बर के दिन ऐलाने (आम) है कि अल्लाह मुश्रिकों से बेज़ार है और उसका रसूल (सल्लल्लाहु अ़लैहि व सल्लम) भी (उनसे बरी-उज़-ज़िम्मा है), पस (ऐ मुश्रिको!) अगर तुम तौबा कर लो तो वोह तुम्हारे हक़्क़ में बेहतर है और अगर तुमने रुगर्दानी की तो जान लो कि तुम हर्गिज़ अल्लाह को आजिज़ न कर सकोगे, और (ऐ हबीब!) आप काफिरों को दर्दनाक अ़ज़ाब की ख़बर सुना दें।

৩. (এ আয়াতগুলো) আল্লাহ্ ও তাঁর রাসূল (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া আলিহী ওয়াসাল্লাম)-এঁর পক্ষ হতে সমস্ত মানুষের প্রতি মহান হজ্জের দিবসে (সাধারণ) ঘোষণা যে, আল্লাহ্ মুশরিকদের থেকে বিমুখ। আর তাঁর রাসূলও (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া আলিহী ওয়াসাল্লাম তাদের থেকে দায়িত্বমুক্ত)। অতঃপর (হে মুশরিকেরা!) যদি তোমরা তওবা করো তবে তা তোমাদের জন্যে উত্তম। আর যদি তোমরা মুখ ফিরিয়ে নাও তবে জেনে রেখো, তোমরা কখনো আল্লাহ্‌র কৌশলকে অকার্যকর করতে পারবে না। আর (হে হাবীব!) আপনি কাফেরদেরকে যন্ত্রণাদায়ক শাস্তির খবর শুনিয়ে দিন;

وأذان من الله ورسوله إلى الناس يوم الحج الأكبر أن الله بريء من المشركين ورسوله فإن تبتم فهو خير لكم وإن توليتم فاعلموا أنكم غير معجزي الله وبشر الذين كفروا بعذاب أليم

4. سوائے ان مشرکوں کے جن سے تم نے معاہدہ کیا تھا پھر انہوں نے تمہارے ساتھ (اپنے عہد کو پورا کرنے میں) کوئی کمی نہیں کی اور نہ تمہارے مقابلہ پر کسی کی مدد (یا پشت پناہی) کی سو تم ان کے عہد کو ان کی مقررہ مدت تک ان کے ساتھ پورا کرو، بیشک اللہ پرہیزگاروں کو پسند فرماتا ہےo

4. Except for those polytheists with whom you made a treaty and who did not breach any of its terms with you, nor did they support anyone against you. So, fulfil the treaty with them until the end of their term. Indeed, Allah loves the God-conscious.

4. Except those idolaters with whom you made an agreement, who then did not show any latitude (in executing the treaty) and who did not support (or reinforce) anyone against you. So fulfil the treaty with them till the end of the term. Surely, Allah loves those who fear Him.

4. Illa allatheena AAahadtum mina almushrikeena thumma lam yanqusookum shayan walam yuthahiroo AAalaykum ahadan faatimmoo ilayhim AAahdahum ila muddatihim inna Allaha yuhibbu almuttaqeena

4. Unntatt de flergudsdyrkerne som dere inngikk traktat med, og som deretter ikke unngikk (å oppfylle traktatens krav) og ikke hjalp (eller forsterket) noen mot dere, oppfyll traktaten inngått med dem til deres bestemte frist. Sannelig, Allah elsker de gudfryktige.

4. सिवाए उन मुश्रिकों के जिनसे तुमने मुआहिदा किया था फिर उन्होंने तुम्हारे साथ (अपने अ़हद को पूरा करने में) कोई कमी नहीं की और न तुम्हारे मुक़ाबले पर किसी की मदद (या पुश्त पनाही) की सो तुम उनके अ़हद को उनकी मुक़र्ररा मुद्दत तक उनके साथ पूरा करो, बेशक अल्लाह परहेज़गारों को पसन्द फरमाता है।

৪. ওই মুশরিকরা ব্যতীত, যাদের সাথে তোমরা চুক্তিতে আবদ্ধ হয়েছিলে, পরে তারা তোমাদের সাথে (স্বীয় অঙ্গীকার পূর্ণ করার ক্ষেত্রে) কোনো ত্রুটি করেনি এবং তোমাদের বিরুদ্ধে কাউকে সাহায্য (অথবা পৃষ্ঠপোষকতা)ও করেনি। সুতরাং তোমরা তাদের সাথে করা সন্ধি তাদের নির্ধারিত সময় পর্যন্ত পূর্ণ করো। নিশ্চয়ই আল্লাহ্ পরহেযগারদের পছন্দ করেন।

إلا الذين عاهدتم من المشركين ثم لم ينقصوكم شيئا ولم يظاهروا عليكم أحدا فأتموا إليهم عهدهم إلى مدتهم إن الله يحب المتقين

5. پھر جب حرمت والے مہینے گزر جائیں تو تم (حسب اعلان جن) مشرکوں (نے تمہارے خلاف پہلے ہی سے جنگ شروع کر دی ہے، میدان جنگ میں ان) کو جہاں کہیں پاؤ قتل کر دو یا اُنہیں گرفتار کر لو اور انہیں قید کر دو اور (انہیں پکڑنے اور گھیرنے کے لیے) ہر گھات کی جگہ ان کی تاک میں بیٹھو، پس اگر وہ (قیدی بنا لیے جانے کے بعد) توبہ کر لیں اور نماز قائم کریں اور زکوٰۃ ادا کرنے لگیں تو (انہیں قید سے رہائی دیتے ہوئے) ان کا راستہ چھوڑ دو (کیونکہ اس صورت میں بھی معاہدۂ امن کی طرح جنگ کا جواز ختم ہوجائے گا)۔ بے شک اللہ بڑا بخشنے والا نہایت مہربان ہےo

5. So when the forbidden months are over, kill the (combatant) idolaters (those who have initiated a war against you) wherever you find them (on the battlefield), or capture them and imprison them, or lie in wait for them at every place of ambush (to besiege them). But, if they repent (after being taken as prisoners of war), and they perform the prayer and give the alms due, then leave their way open (by releasing them). Indeed, Allah is Most-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

5. So when the forbidden months are over, kill the (combatant) idolaters (who have already initiated war against you) wherever you find them (in the battlefield) or capture them and imprison them or lie in wait for them at every place of ambush (to besiege them). But, if they repent (after being taken as captives) and perform the prayer and give the alms, then leave their way open (by releasing them from captivity). Indeed, Allah is Most-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.

5. Faitha insalakha alashhuru alhurumu faoqtuloo almushrikeena haythu wajadtumoohum wakhuthoohum waohsuroohum waoqAAudoo lahum kulla marsadin fain taboo waaqamoo alssalata waatawoo alzzakata fakhalloo sabeelahum inna Allaha ghafoorun raheemun

5. Når de fredlyste månedene har passert, så drep (de militante) flergudsdyrkerne hvor dere enn finner dem (under kampen), og pågrip dem, og fang dem, og sitt i bakhold for (å ta og omringe) dem på ethvert sted. Men hvis de vender om i anger og forretter tidebønnen og gir det pålagte bidraget regelmessig, så la deres vei være. Sannelig, Allah er mest tilgivende, evig nåderik.

5. फिर जब हुर्मत वाले महीने गुज़र जाएं तो तुम (हस्बे ऐलान जिन) मुश्रिकों (ने तुम्हारे ख़िलाफ पहले ही से जंग शुरू कर दी है, मैदाने जंग में उन) को जहां कहीं भी पाओ क़त्ल कर दो या उन्हें गिरफ्तार कर लो और उन्हें कै़द कर दो और (उन्हें पकड़ने और घेरने के लिए) हर घात की जगह उनकी ताक में बैठो, पस अगर वोह (क़ैदी बना लिये जाने के बाद) तौबा कर लें और नमाज़ क़ाइम करें और ज़कात अदा करने लगें तो (उन्हें क़ैद से रिहाई देते हुए) उनका रास्ता छोड़ दो (क्योंकि इस सूरत में भी मुआहिदा ए अम्न की तरह जंग का जवाज़ ख़त्म हो जाएगा) । बेशक अल्लाह बड़ा बख़्शने वाला निहायत मेहरबान है।

৫. অতঃপর যখন নিষিদ্ধ মাস অতিবাহিত হয়, তখন (শান্তি চুক্তি লঙ্ঘনের দায়ে) তোমরা যেখানেই মুশরিকদেরকে পাও তাদেরকে হত্যা করো, আর তাদেরকে অবরোধ করো, তাদেরকে বন্দী করো, এবং তাদেরকে (গ্রেফতার ও ঘেরাও করার জন্যে) সকল ঘাঁটিতে তাদের অপেক্ষায় বসে থাকো। অতঃপর যদি তারা (বন্দী হবার পর) তওবা করে, নামায কায়েম করে এবং যাকাত আদায় করতে শুরু করে, তবে (তাদেরকে বন্দীত্ব থেকে মুক্তি দিয়ে) তাদের পথ ছেড়ে দাও। নিশ্চয়ই আল্লাহ্ মহাক্ষমাশীল, অসীম দয়ালু।

فإذا انسلخ الأشهر الحرم فاقتلوا المشركين حيث وجدتموهم وخذوهم واحصروهم واقعدوا لهم كل مرصد فإن تابوا وأقاموا الصلاة وآتوا الزكاة فخلوا سبيلهم إن الله غفور رحيم

6. اور اگر مشرکوں میں سے کوئی بھی آپ سے پناہ کا خواست گار ہو تو اسے پناہ دے دیں تاآنکہ وہ اللہ کا کلام سنے پھر آپ اسے اس کی جائے امن تک پہنچا دیں، یہ اس لئے کہ وہ لوگ (حق کا) علم نہیں رکھتےo

6. And if any of the polytheists seeks asylum from you, grant him asylum so that he may hear the Word of Allah. Then, convey him to his place of security. That is because they are a people who do not know (the truth).

6. And if any of the idolaters seeks asylum with you, provide him with protection until he listens to the Words of Allah. Then escort him to his haven. This is because these people do not possess the knowledge (of the truth).

6. Wain ahadun mina almushrikeena istajaraka faajirhu hatta yasmaAAa kalama Allahi thumma ablighhu mamanahu thalika biannahum qawmun la yaAAlamoona

6. Og hvis noen av flergudsdyrkerne søker din beskyttelse, så gi ham beskyttelse, slik at han kan høre Allahs ord, før ham deretter til hans tilfluktssted. Dette fordi de er et folk som ikke eier kunnskapen (om sannheten).

6. और अगर मुश्रिकों में से कोई भी आप से पनाह का ख़्वास्तगार हो तो उसे पनाह दे दें ता आं कि वोह अल्लाह का कलाम सुने फिर आप उसे उसकी जाए अम्न तक पहुंचा दें, ये इसलिए कि वोह लोग (हक़्क़ का) इल्म नहीं रखते।

৬. আর যদি মুশরিকদের মধ্যে কেউ আপনার নিকট আশ্রয় প্রার্থনা করে, তবে তাকে আশ্রয় দিন, যাতে সে আল্লাহ্‌র বাণী শুনতে পায়; অতঃপর আপনি তাকে তার নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ে পৌঁছে দিন। তা এ জন্যে যে, তারা (সত্যের ব্যাপারে) অজ্ঞ।

وإن أحد من المشركين استجارك فأجره حتى يسمع كلام الله ثم أبلغه مأمنه ذلك بأنهم قوم لا يعلمون
